A sleepless night revisited

November 2, 2011

Recently, during the middle of the night when my mind was hell-bent on keeping me awake…again…I was listening out the bedroom window to the silence of the city…absolute, total, deafening silence. It was wonderful.

What struck me was how quiet the city can actually be except for the occasional cricket that must have had a case of ‘sympathy insomnia.’

By the time the train rolled through town at 4:33 a.m., my mind started thinking of something to write for our writers group that would be meeting soon.  It started like this …

“The name and number on the caller ID was such a surprise…a good surprise…the kind that takes your breath away and makes your heart skip a beat.  It took her back to when she was 15 years old and had found her first love…that one love that nobody forgets.  It was his name.  It was apparently his number.  But there was no message.

Whew, she thought, just glad she wasn’t here to pick up the phone.  Her anxiety started kicking in and she wondered how she would handle this without acting like a giddy teenager?  Maybe he won’t call back, and she won’t have to worry about it.  But, truth be told, she would so love to hear his soft raspy voice again.

A day or so later there was the second missed call.  Why’s he calling after all this time?

She started thinking again about the loneliness she sometimes felt now…not loneliness as in having nobody in her life because she has a huge loving family, many wonderful friends and a schedule that she can’t keep up with.

It’s more like that loneliness she felt during her decades-long marriage.  The kind of loneliness that can be so easily cured by watching a beautiful sunset or walking under a full moon with someone special, the simple act of holding hands, thinking a thought just seconds before he says the same thing out loud, talking for hours and not realizing how the time flew by, being comfortable together for hours without even having to talk…all this with someone you love dearly and, more important, who recognizes that being friends is the starting place for finding love.

                There goes the phone again…”

I have no idea where it would go from this point.  As I played around in my head with what could be the beginning of a great piece of fiction, the thought came to me that ‘I don’t have time for this.’

I need to work on that new pen and ink drawing I just started.  And then there’s that bracelet I promised to make for No5, the genealogy research I’m way behind on, updates for my family history blog, the unfinished aprons for No5 and No8, planned sleepovers for several of the grandkids, a day trip with my daughter-in-law, Christmas shopping lists to plan, repairs that need to be made to the back porch, the front hallway to paint, the quilt I was going to finish by the end of August and didn’t…

Geez, do I have ADD or what?

By the way, for the young and/or clueless, this is a telephone…

Love the story, and the reality when the dream goes poof. Please keep the story going — it’s a great daydream! Keep the dream alive!

Thanks. I love “the reality when the dream goes poof” comment…very appropriate!
      😉

That was really good. Although I don’t know how you kept in your mind. If I don’t write it down right then, it is gone. I hope you finish the story.

Well, thanks. And thanks for stopping by. Maybe someday the rest of the story will come to me…time will tell.

    Beautiful writing. Don’t stop!
Maybe there starts an affair. One that starts reluctantly and plutonically but evolves slowly. A visit and an emotional chat with her mother reveals she has a half brother…
Or maybe hes calling to let her know of a dark secret he has carried since school…
Ooo you’ve got me at it now!
I think you can finish this. They say ‘there’s a book in everyone’. Maybe this is yours. I can design you a lovely cover once you’ve finished it. Thats my day job! 😉

Ha-ha! We could collaborate and come up with a best seller…? First, I have to finish all the other things on my To-Do list, but now this will always be in the back of my mind.
You’ve got quite an active imagination…love it!
      🙂

Wonderful story! Your muse leads you in the most interesting directions! 🙂

Thank you. And she did revisit me…I was okay with it this time.
      😉

You write brilliantly! I love this little anecdote, especially when you said you get your best inspirations at the dead of the night. It’s the same for me 🙂 Thanks for the visit! xx

Thank you for the compliment. And it was my pleasure to visit you.

Oh My, do you ever sound like ME! Sometimes I think we creative types are cursed as well as blessed because our brains just overflow with ideas, inspirations, & the desire to do a million projects of all types . There isn’t enough time in one lifetime to do it all, but we can’t accept that.
I liked your story very much; hope you were able to finish it, & will post it here .

I think there are a lot of us out there with this same ‘affliction’, and maybe that’s just a normal part of the creative gene. I’m planning to live to a ripe old age of 100 like my grandmother with the hopes that’ll give me enough time to get it all done. Thanks for your feedback!

  7. November 2, 2011 7:03 pm

Ok, you’ve got my attention. Who’s calling? Will they meet? What will the conflict be? Rise in action? You could introduce another character. Is someone with her but she is fantasizing about someone else?? Your goal is to have something to read aloud to your writing group.
I also sense a second story: the metaphor of the quiet city, awake in the night, and the train.
“The writing keeps you in touch with yourself.”

Wow, I’m loving all this feedback with ideas on where to take it from here. This is really getting interesting!
      🙂

Its really beautiful, both what you have to say and how you say it. I think you should set your ADD aside and write more!

    • November 5, 2011 9:24 pm

But the ADD is a genetic thing, didn’t you know? 🙂
I just have to actually complete what I’ve started, right?

I have trouble with the idea of behaviors being “genetic things”! Even ADD. Blue eyes vs. brown eyes, I’m OK with.

If you wait until you complete what you’ve started here, with this blog, you’ll never write a book! But, as I’ve been thinking about it, maybe I’m just being old fashioned, maybe this, a blog, is better than a book…

        • November 6, 2011 7:07 pm

I was pulling your leg, and you do know more than me about genetic things. There’s just so much behavior patterns that I see being consistent within the family.
You’ve got a good point, though, about not getting a book written. Sometime I’ll have to tell you about one that I would really like to write….it’s very familiar to us.
          🙂

ADD? I thought that was just creativity gone wild. That’s what I tell everyone anyway.

    • November 6, 2011 9:44 pm

Hey, I like that. Yes, that must be my problem. 🙂

  11. November 7, 2011 9:27 am

    Great start! Keep going!

Thanks. It seems to be unanimous…guess I better give it some serious thought. And I checked out your blog…very interesting.
